At age 5 his parents divorced and custody was given to his maternal grandparents, Uriah Short, Jr. (b.1845) and Diana M. Foster Short. His name was changed to Uriah John Short, and he was raised by them.
His paternal grandparents were Myron J. Tripp and Sarah Frances Tyler Tripp.
OBITUARY: Uriah J. Short, 75, of 96 Franklin St., Owego, passed away late Saturday at Ideal Hospital.
He was predeceased by his wife, Viola, and a son, Raymond.
He is survived by five sons, Melvin, Norristown, Pa.; Duane, of Barton; Oliver, of Chemung; Phillip, of Owego; and Dale, of Hayward, CA.; two daughters, Mavis McDuffee, Waverly; Yvonne Pollard, Owego; 20 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren; two half-sisters, Jean Dilly, and Marian Cable, both of Sidney; two half-brothers, Irving McDonald, Binghamton; and Raymond McDonald.
Mr. Short has resided in Owego for 35 years. He was a retired employee of the Endicott-Johnson Corp. and was a member of the Owego Senior Citizens' Club.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday from the Estey & Munroe Funeral Home, Owego. The Rev. Arthur Chauncey will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Apalachin.
