Oliver E. "Ollie," "Shorty" Short, 73, of Chemung, N.Y., joined the angels on Wednesday, November 15, 2017.

Ollie was predeceased by his parents, Uriah and Viola (Tennant) Short, siblings, Raymond, Melvin, Mavis, Duane, and Phillip, mother- and father-in-law, Dorothy (Howe) and Watkins Stables, and brother-in-law Daniel Stables.

He is survived by his wife and best friend of 54 years, Betty Stables Short, beloved children and their spouses, Kelly (John) McGowan of Elmira, N.Y., Gary (Kim) Short of Waverly, N.Y., and Laura (Marlon) Martin of Texas, grandchildren, Erinne (Rory) Gibson, Matthew and Mitchell McGowan, Michael and Jesse Short, and Danielle and Dayna Martin, great-grandchildren, Felix, Vincent, and Maxwell Gibson. Ollie is also survived by sister, Yvonne Pollard, brother, Dale Short, brothers-in-law, John, Jerald (Maureen) Stables, sister-in-law, Bonita Greco, and several nieces and nephews.

Ollie worked for almost 30 years for the Elmira Star-Gazette. He was also an avid woodworker in his spare time, making hundreds of hand-carved clocks.

A time of visitation will be held on Sunday, November 19, 2017 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 225 South Main Street, Athens. A memorial service will follow at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Linda Rogers officiating. There will be a gathering of friends and family immediately following the service at the Chemung Volunteer Fire Department on Main Street, Chemung, N.Y.

Burial will be held on Monday at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ollie's memory to: the Chemung Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 138, Chemung, NY 14825.
