Mr. Staples served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a survivor of Leopolville, and received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star.
He was a foreman with Merck and Co. before retiring in 1987.
He moved to the North Port area 26 years ago from Lansdale, Pa.
He was a member of San Pedro Catholic Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Lansdale; the Boat and Fishing Club at La Casa and the Bowling Club of La Casa.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dolores Staples of North Port; three daughters, Diane Fryling of Green Lane, Pa., Kathy Moreno of Venice, Fla., and Bunny Lariviere of Middleburg, Fla.; a son, James W. Staples of North Wales, Pa.; three sisters, Marie Heisler of Swarthmore, Pa., Edna Mae and Marlyn, both of Philadelphia; three brothers, Paul Burke of New Jersey, Richard Staples and Bill Burke, both of Philadelphia; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at the North Port Chapel of Farley Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be at 11:30 a.m. at San Pedro Catholic Church, 14380 Tamiami Trail, North Port. Burial will follow at Venice Memorial Gardens.
Memorial donations may be made to San Pedro Catholic Church, 14380 Tamiami Trail, North Port, FL 34287.
