Mary Rhetta Bell was a daughter of Levi Bell (1812-1893, son of Walter Bell and Hannah Ross) and his second wife, Mary Jane Van Pelt (1831-1905, daughter of William S. Van Pelt and Mary Carrigan). Mary Rhetta married Ernest Marion Field (1866-1902, a son of John Andrew Field and Mary Adeline Wilkinson) on Feb. 29, 1888. They had eight children, though I only know the names of seven of them, as one was apparently a baby who died sometime before 1900.
The known children were: Mary Bell Field (1889-1988, Mrs. Mason Goodman), Charles Neal Field (1891-1972), Fred Marion Field (1893-1969), Ernest Lamont Field (1895-1964), Boyce Ebeneezer Field (1897-1926), John Levi Field (1899-1963) and William Harold Field (1901-1973).
Mary Rhetta Field lived at Coddle Creek in Cabarrus County, in Mooresville, NC, and then in Greenville, SC. Later she returned to Coddle Creek. After her husband's death at a young age, she ran the telephone exchange at Mooresville from her front parlor. She was a devout Presbyterian. Some of the older people at Coddle Creek still remember her.
