Boer War Victoria Cross Recipient. The inscription on his grave reads: "Erected to the memory of No. 29/911 Pte. James Osborne, V.C. by all ranks 2nd. Bn. Northamptonshire Regiment, in which he won the Victoria Cross at Wesselstroom on 22nd. Feb. 1881. Born 13th. April 1857. Died 1st. February 1928. R.I.P." Private Osborne was born in the village of Wigginton, in North-West Hertfordshire, and died in the nearby town of Tring. During the First Boer War, he rode under extremely heavy fire towards a party of more than forty Boers. He then picked up Private Mayes, who had been lying wounded, and carried him back to the British camp at Wesselstroom. Private Osborne is buried next to his wife, Rhoda (q.v.). In spite of the inscription on his grave, there is a convention that no-one ever "wins" the Victoria Cross; they are "awarded" or "receive" it.
