On 30 April 1968, Second Lieutenant Frederick Lee Dyer was assigned to Charlie Battery, 1st Battalion, 12th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam.

On 2 July 1968, Second Lieutenant Dyer, 0801, was attached to Mike Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines, 3rd Marine Division, serving as an Artillery Forward Observer, he was killed in action when he sustained wounds from small arms fire. His body was recovered.
