He was born Feb. 17, 1940, in Colfax, son of Drexel and Velda Humphrey Phillips.
He married Barbara L. Carter; she died in 1995.
He married Rebecca "Becky" Leichtenberg on June 24, 2000, in Hudson; she survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Landen and Kaiden Phillips, both at home; and one stepson, Brian Leichtenberg, Bloomington.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
Robert was a U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy veteran. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post in Normal.
He was an avid NASCAR racing fan, enjoyed watching the CornBelters and was a talented woodworker.
Robert worked as a guard at Pontiac Correctional Center and he retired from Illinois State University after 25 years, where he worked as a police officer for the campus.
