Howard worked at many different jobs on a farm for John Sullivan in North Dakota and a farm in northwest Minnesota. He parked cars at two different places in Minneapolis while attending the University of Minnesota for two years. Other part times jobs were Western Auto Supply, Reinhart Brothers Parts Supply and Honeywell Heat Regulator.
While working at Honeywell, he met Edna Bergman, whom he married on February 20, 1937. Edna and Howard both worked and lived very frugally. They bought and fixed up several small homes, including a duplex.
Howard dreamed of owning a business of his own, a hardware store. In 1946, he learned there was a new Coast-to-Coast store opening in Parkersburg, Iowa, so they sold everything they had and moved to Iowa, just in time for his daughter to start school. They operated that store for 25 years and made a good living, eventually selling the store to their son, Dennis, in 1972.
For ten years, Howard and Edna had been planning to build a new house and that dream was realized in 1975. They enjoyed their new home and also did some traveling. In the spring of 1977, Howard learned he had cancer which was inoperable. He made several trips to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, and eventually died there on August 27, 1977. He is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg.
Howard was survived by his wife, daughter, Joyce (Harold) Nichol, and son, Dennis (Sharon) Knudson, four grandchildren, and two sisters, Ruby Knudson, Lottie (John) Brelsford and many nieces and nephews.
