HEMINGWAY - George Franklin Chandler, 82, retired farmer and cattleman of Hemingway, died Sunday morning.
Funeral services will be at the Morris Funeral Home Chapel at 3 p.m. in Hemingway Monday with the Rev. Leroy Floyd officiating. Burial will follow in Union Methodist Cemetery.
Mr. Chandler was a son of the late Benjamin B. and Alice Huggins Chandler of the Henry community, where he was born March 10, 1884, and lived most of his lifetime. He was a pioneer in cattle raising in SC on a large scale basis. Mr. Chandler was instrumental in establishing the Hemingway Tobacco Market in 1948. He helped organize the first bank that was established in Hemingway and served on its board of directors for many years. He was a member of Union Methodist Church. Mr. Chandler was widely known in hunting and fishing circles. He was associated with the Snows Island Hunting Club as long as his health permitted.
Mr. Chandler was married to the late Mrs. Leila Davis Chandler.
Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Thea W. (Gladys) Cox of Hemingway, Mrs. M. C. (Ethelyn) Bryan of Mullins, Mrs. Clarence P. (Claralee) Snowden Jr. of Charleston, Mrs. Henry (Claudia) Alford of Gresham and Mrs. George (Alice) Breault of Newport News, Va.; three sons, G. Harold Chandler, Sherod T. Chandler and Fred D. (Doc) Chandler, all of Hemingway; a sister, Mrs. J. D. Johnson of Georgetown; two brothers, William J. Chandler of Hemingway and John Henry Chandler of Johnsonville; 23 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.
