Elizabeth Wilson was born 20 March 1841; recorded in Vol. 24 p 404 to Peter Wilson and Tabitha Steel/e in York, Parish of Masham, East Hang, Fearby, Leyburn, Middleham, (north Riding) England.

Elizabeth was a twin of Tabitha Wilson, Jr. and listed as 11 weeks old on the census: 1841 June York, civil: Masham; Hundred East Hang; Township Fearby, Registration Dist Leyburn Union; sub Middleham. [Dropdown menu doesn't allow any of the places or just York.] Tabitha Steel, her mother was listed as not born in Yorkshire as her husband, but the census didn't list her birth place. We have never found Tabitha, Sr.'s parents' names and there are many with the Steel surname.

Peter and Tabitha had 8 children: John, William, Marmaduke, Jane, Elizabeth, Tabitha, Mary, and Martha.

Tabitha died after the birth of Martha who was born 9 Nov 1844. Tabitha died 24 Dec. 1844 and she was buried in Masham at St. Mary's the Virgin Church of England that they attended on 26 Dec 1844 aged 36 (this would make her older than Peter and born about 1808 instead of 1811 as the census said). Her death was recorded in Vol. 24 p 238 of Leyburn records.

Peter and his 7 children sailed for America from Liverpool, England arriving in New York, NY on 15 April 1851. They sailed on the SS Arctic, piloted by John Augustus Zwege, master of the ship; which had one funnel and 3 masts.

The Arctic had a full crew of 150 men and monthly payroll was $4500, being one of the best paid crew ever. They had a modern electric call bell system with enunciater. The ship ran on coal and carried a cargo of mail, cotton, grain, whale oil and provisions. They also carried cows so there would be fresh milk.

The ship had five meals per day: breakfast at 8 a.m., lunch at 12 noon, dinner at 3:30 p.m., tea at 7 p.m. and supper at 10 p.m. First class tickets for one way were $125.00 and second class were $70 one way. First class would hold 130 and second class held 80 people.

The Arctic was known as the "clipper of the seas." It was launched 28 January 1850 at the East River shipyard of William H. Brown. There were 30,000 on hand to watch the launch on this cold day. Near the shipyard of Stillman, Allen and Company was Novelty Iron Works at the foot of 12th Street in Manhattan that built the ship.

Peter's destination according to the ship manifest was Ohio. He had a brother John that came to America first and then they came to Wisconsin. Peter's two older brothers, Mathew and Marmaduke had come earlier to Wis. so that is probably why they came on to Wisconsin. They could not have stayed too long in Ohio, since they were in Wisconsin at least by the 1855 census and he was remarried by 1856.

Elizabeth never used a middle name or initial and lived in Green Lake County, Wis. where she met John Thatcher Stallard who was born in Hinton Blewett, near East Harptree, Hundred of Winterstoke, Somerset, England and came to America with his parents arriving in Boston 1 Nov 1849 when he was 11 years old. His father was Benjamin Stallard and mother was Mary Ann Wookey Stallard. He was the only boy in the family of girls and he was in the middle. They married 25 Oct 1857 in Manchester, Green Lake, Wis. (near Kingston). Elizabeth was 16 and John was 19.

Elizabeth died 17 Feb 1903 on Tuesday afternoon at her home in Humbird, Clark County, Wis. after a short illness; recorded in Vol. 3 page 158 and was buried on Thursday afternoon 19 Feb 1903 after a funeral from the Methodist Episcopal Church of Humbird. Burial was in the Mentor Cemetery. She had a stroke on 5 February and died on the 17th.

Excerpt from Merrillan Leader, Merrillan, Wis. 17 Feb 1903:
Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 17, 1903, death entered our village and bore from our midst, Mrs. J. T. Stallard, a lady known and loved by the whole community. She had lived among us for 36 years, and counted her friends by acquaintances.

Elizabeth Wilson was born in Yorkshire, England, March 20, 1841. Her mother died when she was but 3 years old. In 1851 with her father, two brothers, and four sisters, she came to Green Lake County, Wis.

She was married on Oct. 25, 1857 to J. T. Stallard, and lived in Green Lake Co., until the summer of 1866 when they moved on a farm near Humbird and have since resided here. Their union was blessed with 6 children, all of whom live to mourn her loss, and were with her on the last hours of being on earth. Her sickness was of short duration, being sick scarcely two weeks, and suffering no pain, she knew all her loved ones to the last. Thus after a brief illness, a kind and patient soul has passed to rest....

The 6 children of Elizabeth and John were:
John Edward Stallard
Henry William Stallard
Franklin Marmaduke Stallard
Mabel Luella Stallard Shute
Maud Alice Stallard Huyck
Burton John Stallard

{Elizabeth's oldest brother John Wilson, baptized 2 March 1834 was on the 1841 census in Masham and then he was listed as aged 7 and later that year he died and was buried on 15 August 1841 in St. Mary's Parish church cemetery.}
