NOTE: Information on John William Gabriel came from several sources.
Terry Mclean, provided the first lead on the census material.
Jackson Reynolds provided the majority of documentation of family
records.
Barbara Giddens also provided material and insight to this line.
John W.G. Pickens was living in Hardin County when the census of
1850 1860 and 1880 were made.
He was listed as a Minister at Purdy, McNairy Co in the 1870
census. ems 1963
In material from Jackson Reynolds, Rt. 2, Bx 615, Okmulgee OK 7447:
dated 25 Jul 1996: "
John William Gabriel PICKENS, b. 6 Mar 1832, Hardin TN, d. 4 Feb 1899,
Hennepin, Pickens Co., Chickasaw Nation, Indina Territory; m. Mary Ann
(Liza) JONES, b. Jul 1837 TN, d. ca 1906, Hennepin, Pickens Co.,
Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory; m. 9 Sep 1853, Tishomingo Oklahoma.
The location of Mary Ann's grave is not known, but one report places it
in Davis Oklahoma. She is thought to have been living with her
daughter, Georgia (Pickens) FOX, at the time of her death.
JWG was inclined toward preaching from the time he was a small boy.
His grandaughter, Zona Louann, has said that he used to stand on a
stump in the woods as a boy, preaching to the trees, and he is shown in
the McNairy TN census of 1870 as "Minister of the Gospel." As an adult
he worked among the CHOCTAW Indians and spoke the language. Descendants
have all reported him to be strict and "righteous." A great
granddaughter says, "while he was alive, there was no drinking or
fighting; he kept them all on their knees..."
Zona tells and interesting story in which JWG's brother all supported
the Confederacy and JWG was against the war. After the Civil War, she
says, they loaded him, his family and his belongings into five wagons,
and told him to "go west" or they would kill him. There may be some
truth in the story; however, we know from census documents that they
did not emigrate to Indian Territory until about 1885, "when Frank was
16", (Zona).
At this time we don't know very much about Mary Ann JONES.
Reportedly, she was a least one quater CHOCTAW. Interestingly, however
Choctaw Citizenship claims for the children of JWG and Mary Ann were
not based on her alleged blood line, but that of his father."
"JWG and Mary Ann "went to Texas" and then moved on up into Indian
Territory, settling to live "by permit" in an area west of present
Davis and Pauls Valey, Oklahoma. It appears that most, if not all, of
his family went with him together. Most of the family settled near
Hennepin, about 13 miles west of Davis. Although we speculate that the
family may have tarried in the area near Gainesville, TX, a common
rout into the Choctaw Natin was through Doaksville and Fort Towson,
near the Red River in McCurtain County. Pickens County, where the
family fnally settled, was named after Edmund PICKENS, a Chief of the
Chickasaw Nation, half brother to Capt. James PICKENS, and a relative
of John William Gabriel Pickens."
