OBITUARY

FLORENCE — Peggy Aiken McLeod, 90, died Saturday, April 7, 2007, at home after an illness.

Mrs. McLeod was born in Florence in 1916, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jefferson Boone Aiken. She was a graduate of McClenaghan High School and attended Wesleyan College in Macon, Ga. She furthered her education at Traphagan School of Fashion and Design in New York City, where her gift of art and design was accomplished.

She married David Hamilton McLeod of Florence in 1937, consummating a romance that began for both of them when they were in high school together. After marrying, they made their permanent residence in Florence, and after his death in 1986 she remained in their home at 905 Santee Drive until her death.

Peggy was an active member of Central United Methodist Church for 68 years, where her father-in-law, Dr. Daniel Melvin McLeod, served as a former pastor. She was a member of The Sarah Blanton Sunday School Class and The Sarah Blanton Church Circle. She taught in the Primary Department Youth Class for many years.

Peggy was a charter member and president of The Junior League of Florence. She was the first president and charter member of The Florentine Society; a charter member and past president of The Wildwood Garden Club. She served on The Aiken Foundation Board for many years.

She was very active in community service during her husbands 16 years as mayor of Florence.

Peggy was first in her life a Christian, a daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. She was a tender loving Mother and joyful friend who lived by her favorite quote Life can be Beautiful. Her family will be forever blessed by her example of motherhood. She will leave us all a part of her examples of kindness, generosity, patience and ability to carry burdens with courage.

She is survived by her two daughters, Lyles McLeod Stone and Peg A. McLeod, of the home; a son, David Hamilton McLeod, Jr. (Betty Tull Holliday); three grandsons, Trey Stone (Nell Stukes Carson), David McLeod Stone (Laura Livingston), and Dr. Croft Stone (Dr. Ching Ching Yap); two granddaughters, Frances Fields McLeod and Chrissie Aiken McLeod; three great-grandchildren, Jodie (Ye-Shiu) Stone and Croft (Ye-Tun) Stone and David (Mac) McLeod Stone; her sisters-in-law, Eugenia Turrentine Aiken and Ann Burch Aiken; her precious life-long friend, Elizabeth Murrell Smith; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the home, 905 Santee Drive, from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 8, 2007. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, April 9, 2007, in Central United Methodist Church with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home.
