Although Homer's Social Security record shows 1899 as his birth date, census, military, and other records indicate it was more likely what is on his tombstone. Homer's sister Gladys Mounts Zimmerman was born on the 13 Aug 1899 and listed as such on her SS death record. Also, Homer is not listed on the 1900 Census. Homer's mother listed having 5 children and only 4 living, the four listed were , Vada May Mounts White, Ora Ellen Mounts Benefield, Roy Mounts, and Gladys E Mounts Zimmerman, Benj. Franklin Mounts Jr dying after a couple of months. The reason the age is confused is that to join the Navy in WWI, he had to lie about his age to stay out of the foster home he was assigned to, and the State Board who was looking for him. He enlisted in 1918 and served on the USS DeKalb which served here and France. Returning in 1919 where he was transferred to the Naval Reserve and was mustered out in 1921. He went back to Indiana where he married Mildred Louise Ford the same year, but were divorced in 1921. By 1930 He had moved to Cooter, Pemiscot County Missouri, where his brother Roy lived. Roy had moved there with his foster family from Indiana, the Gillilands, and near his Uncle Samuel Mounts in Poplar Bluff Missouri. Homer married Thelma Vinson and they were together until his death. He left Cooter Missouri and moved to Phoenix with his family where he became a carnival worker.
