Dawson was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Clara Partee; son, Allen Partee; sister, "Dean" Davis; and brothers, Max D Partee Sr. and Frank Partee Jr.
Dawson was born on Oct. 20, 1925, in Birmingham. After high school, Dawson enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and fought with the 1st Marine Division which received three Presidential Unit Citations. Dawson was involved in many Pacific battles including Guadalcanal and Peleliu. Following the Battle of Guadalcanal, the division's Marines were sent to Melbourne, Australia, to rest and refit. It was during this time that the division took the Australian folk song "Waltzing Matilda" as its battle hymn. To this day, 1st Division Marines still ship out to this song being played. Dawson received multiple decorations, including the Purple Heart.
Dawson provided for his family by working as a millwright at Republic Steel for 35 years. After his retirement he went on to serve the community as a District 6 councilman in Gadsden for 12 years. He was also a member of Walnut Park Baptist Church.
Dawson was affectionately known as "Big Big" or "Big-Daddy" to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time with his family and will be greatly missed by all.
Dawson was a favorite cousin to Herman George Townley and they spent many childhood hours together. George moved to Texas after WWII but continued to go "home" to Gadsden annually to visit his family. One of the first stops was always Dawson.
