William Jones left Wales for the United States in 1848 and headed for California's gold fields. During the Civil War he enlisted as a private at Auburn, Placer County, California, December 2 and was mustered into Company K, 4th California Infantry, December 3, 1861. Private Jones was mustered out at Drum Barracks (Wilmington), Los Angeles County, California, December 2, 1864. He re-enlisted as a private at San Francisco March 22 and was mustered into Company F, 7th California Infantry, at the Presidio of San Francisco March 24, 1865. Private Jones was posted to Fort Mason, Arizona Territory. He was mustered out at Fort Yuma, Imperial County, California, March 19, 1866. After the war he married (wife's name unknown), whom he later divorced. William filed for a Civil War veteran's pension in California on September 22, 1896, and received application No. 1,181,318 and certificate No. 1,123,242. He refiled for his veteran's pension June 10, 1907. William was admitted to the California Veterans' Home at Yountville, where he appears as a resident, age 72 years, in the 1910 US Census. William Jones died at the Veterans' Home and was buried in the home's cemetery.
