A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg May 8, 1861, and mustered into federal service there May 28 as a private with Co. H, 7th Pennsylvania Reserves (aka 36th Pennsylvania Infantry). He was captured at the Chickahominy July 1, 1862, and paroled at Aikens' Landing September 13, 1863. Captured again at the Wilderness May 5, 1864, he was incarcerated at Andersonville from where he made good his escape on September 12, 1864. He made it Union lines and honorably discharged November 3, 1864.
He married Susan Steward November 14, 1865, in Philadelphia, but they had no children.
