Although Eleanor's place of birth is given as Connecticut in the 1850 Census, another source places it as Gallipolis, Ohio.

Eleanor and Robert Harvey Caldwell were married in Marion, Ohio in 1828. Although Robert was considered a substantial citizen of Fremont, being a blacksmith, part owner of the Lower Sandusky Tavern, and the owner of land in Fulton County, he joined with others from Fremont in a mutual aid agreement called the Ft. Stephenson Mining Association and headed to California to seek gold in 1850.

This was a very difficult time for Eleanor, as his letters to her attest. In addition to financial hardship during his absence, she gave birth and lost an adopted child. Robert died in California in December, 1853.

When Eleanor died in 1868, the newspaper gave her age as 57. The estate papers list the son Augustus as her only heir. The relationship between Eleanor and the Amanda listed in the census records is not known, but the estate papers also show that Eleanor owed Amanda and her husband J.J. Eddy a non-trivial amount of money. Augustus Brown was appointed Administer of the estate, and J.K. Hord was appointed guardian of Eleanor's son until age 21.

An Augustus Caldwell is found in the 1870 Census in Fremont, in the household of Alfred Rice. I have yet to locate him in the 1860 Census, although he may have gone by the name Clinton A. Estate papers say that he was living in Elmore, Ottawa County, Ohio in 1868-69.
