Dies Wednesday

William Jess Oakes, 89, of 235 Cave Spring Street, died yesterday afternoon following a long illness. Mr. Oakes had resided in Rome and Floyd County for the past 39 years, and was a member of the Baptist Church.

He is survived by seven sons, Hart, Jim, Lewis and Ernest Oakes, all of Rome; John Oakes of Huntsville, Ala.; Jess Oakes, of Cullman, Ala., and Luther Oakes, of Chattanooga, Tenn.; five daughters, Mrs. Leila Smith, of Early, Ga.; Mrs. Tom Smith, of Sprite, Ga.; Mrs. Bela Blankenship, of Richland, Ga.; Mrs. Eunice Jones, of Calhoun, Ga., and Mrs. Ronear Martin, of Rome; one sister, Mrs. Addie Leroy, of Dalton, Ga.; also 67 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren survive.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Pisgah Baptist Church, the Rev. Howard Holcomb and the Rev. Leroy Perry officiating. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery.

Six grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
