Francis Borgia "Jack" Newton, Sr., 80, Bardstown, formerly of Holy Cross, died at 9:36 a.m., February 2, 1999, at Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown.

He was born on October 19, 1918, in Holy Cross, Kentucky, the son of Charles Roy Newton and Mary Marie Newton.

He retired from Barton Distillery in Bardstown after 25 years of service.

He was a United States Army Veteran of World War II serving from 1942 to 1945 and receiving four Bronze Stars.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Roy Newton Sr., on June 18, 1979, and his mother, Mary Marie Newton, on Dec. 1, 1975.

Survivors include two sons, Francis Borgia "Frank" Newton, Jr., of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and Jerry Newton, of Loretto; four sisters, Cecilia Clark Mattingly, Margaret Hagan, and Jane Clark, all of Holy Cross, and Louise Clark of Bardstown; a brother, Harold Newton of Holy Cross; and three grandchildren.

Funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m., on February 5, 1999, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Raywick with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Ernest Schumacher officiated and was assisted by Deacon Joe Dant. Pallbearers were Jim Jeffords, Ben Thomas, Mark Newton, Judy Leake, Francis Leroy Hagan, and Keith HIlpp. Full military honors were provided by the Marion County Honor Guard.

Prayers were held at 7 p.m., on February 4, 1999, at Mattingly Funeral Home, Loretto, which was in charge of the arrangements.
