Thomas Benjamin Connelly in Confederate Soldier's Uniform. Born in 1842 in Dinwiddie County, Virginia to Martha Collier and Uriah Connelly, 'Ben' as he was known to be called, enlisted in the 5th Battalion, Company E (the 'Dinwiddie Guards') at the rank of Corporal on July 6, 1861. He fought in the Petersburg area during the Civil War at Battles of the Crater and Gravely Run. He was taken prisoner and kept in an underground prison, which adversely affected his health for the rest of his life. He died October 8, 1899 and is buried in Dinwiddie County, VA at the old Connelly homeplace known as 'The Glebe'.
