At age 10, MOSS' father died and he dropped out of school to begin working to help support the family. He never did return to school; however, he was very intelligent and especially good with numbers.
He worked as a farm laborer in the tobacco fields of the Connelly farm until in 1915, at age 26, he moved with his mother , 3 brothers and 2 sisters to Raleigh, NC to find more meaningful work.
It was here he met and married MARTHA CAROLINE GREEN (1896-1869) on 30 Nov 1916 (Thanksgiving Day) in the parlor of her parents' home at 712 West North Street. They had seven (7) children.
Moss was a Food Broker for large grocery stores. He ALWAYS wore a sharply starched and ironed white long-sleeve shirt and tie and pleated slacks; whether he was working or relaxing at home. He was quite a 'dapper' dresser.
He was an excellent bridge player and a member of a Raleigh Bridge Club. He was also a member of John Rosier Lodge No. 608 in Atlanta, GA and the York Rite. As a Shriner, he played the Clarinet in the Shriner's Band. He was also very interested in the Shriner's Children's Hospital (Burn Center.)
Unfortunately, he was a heavy smoker and he died Tuesday, 29 Jul 1889, age 73, in his home at 617 Mills Street, Raleigh of Bronchopneumonia (one week), diabetes (23 yrs), and generalized arteriosclerosis with bilateral blindness (yrs) (per NC Cert of Death). He was blind for the last 10 years of his life and his finger tips were orange from the nicotine stain of smoking his cigarettes right down to the very end.
Moss or 'Mr. Connelly', as he was known, was buried Thursday, 31 Jan 1963 at Montlawn Memorial Park, Marker# 2927; Section 6, Lot 101, Unit D, Space 1; Marker refinished 25 Jul 1994.
He is buried next to his son Robert Lee 'Bob Lee' Green Connelly who died at age 35, 14 Oct 1967 as the result of a single car accident.
Moss' wife, Martha Caroline Green ((1896-1969) is buried in the Green Family Cemetery in Lillington, Harnett Co., NC.
