Robert L Beig, 75, died Feb 21, 2003 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD. Visitation was Feb 24, at Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington. Services were held Feb 25, 2003 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hartington with Pastor Paul Reimers officiating, burial was at Hartington City Cemetery. Pallbears were Tom Lammers, Todd Lammers, Scott Wedel, Robert Beig, Jr., Jim Lutmer, Kelly Kramer, and Chris Beig.
Bob was born Aug 8, 1927 to Emil and Lena Peterson Beig in Hartington, Nebraska. Bob grew up in Hartington and graduated from Hartington High School in 1945. He worked briefly for Ruben Bird's People's Store - grocery store and general merchandise store. He told of driving to New Orleans, LA and bringing a load of bananas back to Hartington for Rubin's store. Bananas were in short supply because of the war. Bob moved to Hasting in 1951, where he worked at the ammunition depot. Bob's best friends in Hastings were Charles and Vesta (Bacon)Hourigan. Charles Henry Hourigan died in Mendota, Ill. Sept. 2,1954 in a trucking accident Bob helped take care of Vesta and the Hourigan children. Bob and Vesta Hourigan and the Hourigan children were married May 3, 1955 in Denver, Colorado. At the time of their marriage Bob nick-named Vesta, "Betsy". Bob and Vesta lived in Los Angeles, CA. for a short time before moving back to Hartington in 1958.
Robert L Beig worked for the Nebraska Department of Roads, Construction Division, from 1958 to 1980 in the engineering and road inspector branch. He retired in 1980.
His family was very important to him and he was a devoted father and grandfather.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Vesta, five daughters: Jeannie, Peggy, Charlotte, and Jance Hourigan; and DeAnn and son Robert Beig, Jr.; 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, a sister Darlene Beig Miles and two aunts He was preceeded in death by his parents, and son Charles "Danny" Hourigan. Robert's mother Lena Francis Petersen Beig is buried in the City Cemetery in Hartington Memorial # 30590088. Robert's father Emil William Beig was born Oct 15, 1893 in Odebolt, Iowa. Emil Beig was a trucker at an oil station, in the 1940 federal census of Hartington. They moved to California in 1957. Both Emil and Lena died in California. Lena died on May 1, 1962. She is buried in the Hartington Cemetery. Emil was married again on July 12, 1963 to Cordelia Clyse (maiden name Warren) Emil also died in Bellflower, LA county, California. Emil died Sept 25, 1965 and is buried at Angeles Abbey Memorial Park Cemetery; Compton, Los Angeles County, California.
