He was born near Antietam Juction, south of Waynesboro, Washington Township, Franklin County, PA. He died of an outbrake of Scaelet Fever, following the deaths of his three sisters, Susan Bittner; Catharine Bittner; Barbara Bittner and her mother Elizabeth Ferguson Bittner, March and April 1863. At the time of death, his father Solomon Bittner was serving with the Union Army, Company E. 158th Reg't. PA. Infantry.
