Martha Laxton was the daughter of Alfred Gallatin Laxton (1819-1892) and Sarah E. "Sallie" Thomas (1825-1893). Both of her parents were born in Campbell Co., Tennessee, possibly that part of Campbell that became part of Scott County when it was formed in 1849. They are buried in the Laxton Family Cemetery in Oneida, Scott Co., TN.

Martha's father, Alfred, was the son of Thomas Laxton (abt 1795-1862) and Elizabeth Thomas (abt 1800-1881). Thomas was born in South Carolina, Elizabeth in Virginia. Both died in Scott Co., TN, however, their burial sites are currently unknown.

Martha's mother, Sarah, was the daughter of Abner Wylie Thomas (1799-1884) and Rebecca Brown (1799-1894). Abner was born in Lee Co., Virginia, Rebecca in Campbell Co., TN. They are buried in the Abner Thomas Cemetery in Oneida, Scott Co., TN.

On Feb. 14, 1847 Martha married married 20 year old Jeptha "Jep" (King) Stephens in Scott Co., TN. Martha was 18 years of age. Jep was the first born son of "Dipen" Burl King (1826-1917) and probably Virginia (?) Jane Stephens (abt 1825-abt 1851).

Although Jep acknowledged "Dipen" Burl King as his father and had a decent relationship with him, he always used the Stephens name after his adoptive mother's divorce (abt 1852) from his father. It is interesting to note that Jep named his first born son, "Burrel", after his father, but either he or his son decided to spell the name differently. Burrel became a highly respected preacher ministering in churches in Texas, Oklahoma and eventually Arkansas.

As indicated earlier, Jep's biological mother is somewhat uncertain. However, he considered Rebecca Stephens (1835-1901) as his mother. She was his father's second wife and was the only mother he ever knew. It is thought that his biological mother died when he was about four years old. Rebecca, probably a cousin to Jep's real mother, was the second of his father's five known wives.

Martha and Jep were married for 31 years and had 10 known children. They are listed in his memorial. The first seven of their known children were born in Scott Co., TN. In the early 1880s they moved their family to Texas, where their last three known children were born, and spent the rest of their lives there.

Martha died on Sept. 12, 1898 in Brushy, Montague Co., TX at the age of 50. She is buried in the Brushy Cemetery.

Her husband, Jeptha, died two years later, on July 28, 1900, in Bowie, Montague Co., TX at the age of 53. He too, is buried in the Brushy Cemetery, next to his wife, Martha. Their daughter, Sarah, who died in 1896, is buried next to them.
