Murray Jefferson Patton was the youngest of 14 children born to John Best Patton (1847-1937) and Julia Frances (McDonald) Patton (1858-1929) of St. Clair County, Illinois.

March 20, 1923 Murray was married to Katie Marie (Loesche) Patton (1902-1943) - they had one son that died as a newborn infant.

After the death of Katie - Murray remarried on August 30, 1946 to Edna B. (Stein) Patton (1922-1987).
