OXFORD On Saturday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m., friends and colleagues of Fletcher Hanks will gather in Oxford's Town Park to "swap lies and tell tales" as Hanks said he would like for his memorial service.
Following the park event, there will be a gathering in the Parish Hall of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity in Oxford to view memorabilia and talk with old friends of Hanks. All are invited.
Fletcher Hanks of Oxford died March 16, 2008. Hanks was known both locally and in places the names of which most have never heard. During World War II, he was a pilot for the famous China National Aviation Corporation, which flew supplies from India into China to supply Allied forces with materiel with which to fight the Japanese invaders.
After the war, Hanks was a successful businessman in Oxford. Upon his retirement from business, he organized athletic events that have received national and international recognition, including the annual Eagleman Triathlon in Cambridge, one of only a few qualifying events for the Ironman event in Hawaii, perhaps the most famous of all triathlons. Proceeds from the events Hanks organized always supported charity.
