Note: In the 1800s, Katherine the Great invited non-Jewish German farmers to the Ukraine to improve agricultural methods with the promise of free land. In 1900(?) Czar Nicholas (?) expropriated the German land and over 100,000 Germans were dispersed from the Ukraine.

John Matz' family was sent to Siberia. In 1909, they immigrated to the United States and settled in Mandan, North Dakota with a large group of other German/Russian immigrants.
