Gretta was born in Pretty Prairie, Kansas, the daughter of Samuel and Kate Roland. The family moved to Oklahoma, Indian Territory, in a land rush, hoping to claim a homestead.

After Kate's death in 1913, the family moved to Lawrence, Kansas, where Sam married again and Gretta completed high school.

She was an enthusiastic basketball player in high school. Her yearbook predicted that she would tour the world as coach of a women's basketball team.

Gretta married Lawrence Wayne Brown May 28, 1918. Gretta and husband Beau raised three sons: Richard, Lawrence Jr, and Robert. Together they worked at the family store, Brown's Decorating Shop in El Dorado, Kansas, and maintained it throughout their lives.
Gretta was survived by her three sons and three grandchildren.
