Sam and Kate, with their first two children, Ethel Dove and Gretta Adeline, moved from Kansas to Oklahoma hoping for a chance to take a farm in the Oklahoma land rush. They settled in Comanche County, where they farmed. Kate had two more children in Tillman, a daughter, Gladys Ersula and a son (Samuel) Ralph. Kate died there.

After Kate's death in Oklahoma in 1913, the family moved to Lawrence, Kansas, where Ethel and Gretta graduated high school. He married Edna Holder in Lawrence in 1915. Together they had three more children, Elvin Mackey, Joseph Lee, and Margaret Roland.

Sam eventually moved his family to Kansas City, Missouri, where he operated a sewing machine in a saddle making company. The younger children attended Raytown High School.

Sam later owned a small store and restaurant in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, and worked as a manager for Montgomery Ward. He eventually retired and moved to Raytown, Missouri, where he and Edna lived near their children Elvin and Margaret. Elvin died in 1990 and is buried in St. Louis with his wife Dorothy (Olsen) Roland, who died in 2007.
