Dick was born in Topeka, Kansas, where his father was working after returning from World War I. The family moved to El Dorado shortly after his birth. He attended school in El Dorado and graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in chemical engineering.

Immediately after graduating, Dick entered World War II, serving in the army at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

Dick was married to his second wife, Virginia (Smith) Brown, in 1954. They lived in Raytown, Missouri, for the rest of his life. He and Virginia had no children.
