He was the grandson of Johann George and Anna Margaret Matthews Valentine, as well as Michael and Catharina Nied Freeze. He married in Pickaway County, on July 29, 1817, to Margaret/Rebecca Drum, daughter of John and Barbara Strasser Drum. They were the parents of 9 known children: Samuel, Elizabeth, Levi J., Amos D., George Washington, Jacob, Mary, Andrew and Malinda Valentine. Joshua passed away in Washington Township, Pickaway County, Ohio, on June 1, 1870, and was buried in St. Paul's Evangelical Church Cemetery, Pickaway County.
