BIOGRAPHY LAST UPDATED on 15 Jan 2024

Alva E. Long was born on 14 Oct 1891 in Garnett, Anderson County, Kansas. Sources and evidence are generally consistent with the birthdate and consistent with the birth location, however a few conflicts do exist regarding the birth year. Death certificate lists 1892, but has a few known errors. His obituaries, WWI Draft registration cards and his gravestone all list 1891. Because of these conflicts, I cannot state with 100% certainty his exact birth date. However, based on the preponderance of evidence, I am assessing 1891 is the correct information until other evidence is obtained to prove otherwise.

His parents were Joseph Edwin D. Long and Lydia Viola Oshel. He had 7 siblings; Maggie Lodessa (m. McHatton), Dee Dennis, Carl Oren, Thomas, Jessie, Silvia Pearl (m. Jacobs), and Lillian Georgia (m. Griswold). According to family records, it appears Thomas and Jessie passed away prior to 1900. According to the WWI Draft Registration Cards dated on 5 Jun 1917, he was medium height and had grey eyes and light-colored hair. He worked as an iron worker and roll man the Kansas City Bolt and Nut company.

During his early and teenage years, he lived in several Kansas and Missouri locations due to his parent's relocations. According to his sibling's birth locations, sometime between 1891-1893 the family moved to Missouri, then back to Kansas between 1893-1895, then back again to Missouri between 1895-1900. According to the 1900 United States Federal Census taken on 19 Jun 1900, the family lived on a farm in Henry Township in Vernon County, Missouri. At the time, Alva Long was 8 years old and lived with his parents Joseph E Long (29) and Viola (26) and his 3 siblings; Maggie Long (10), Dennis (6), and Carl Owen (4). Sometime between 1900-1905, the family moved about 65 miles west from Missouri into Kansas. According to the 1905 Kansas State Census taken on 1 Mar 1905, they lived in La Harpe, Allen County, Kansas. At the time, Alva Long was 13 years old and lived with his parents J.E. Long (33) and Viola (32) and his 4 siblings; Dee (11), Carl (9), Pearl (5), and Lillie (3). By 1906, he was living with his parents at 419 N Chestnut in Iola, Allen County, Kansas. Based on Alva's marriage in 1908, the family moved about 100 miles north to Independence, Missouri in Jackson County sometime between 1906-1908.

At age 17, Alva and 36-year-old recently widowed, Calista (Thompson) Newland, applied for a marriage license on 17 Oct 1908 in Jackson County, Missouri. They were married the same day by Minister H.S. Church in Jackson County, Missouri. It doesn't appear Alva and Callie had any children. According to the 1910 United States Federal Census taken on 22 Apr 1910, they owned a home at 1223 West Haywood in Independence, Jackson, Missouri. At the time, Alva Long was 19 years old and lived with his spouse Callie (36) and her 6 children from a previous marriage Eva M Newland (19), Alma J Newland (16), Mirian J Newland (12), Thompson Newland (8), Rodrick W Newland (7), and Eunice Newland (3). He lived at this residence until his death in 1918.

Alva passed away from lobar pneumonia at the early age of 26 at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, 15 Mar 1918 at his home in Independence, Jackson County, Missouri. Services were held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday 17 Mar 1918 at the Stone Church in Independence.
