BIOGRAPHY UPDATED on 15 Jan 2024

Maggie Lodessa Long was born on 14 Dec 1888 in Iola, Allen County, Kansas. Sources and evidence are generally consistent with the birthdate and consistent with the birth location, however a few conflicts do exist regarding the birth year. Marriage Records and some obituaries list 1889 as an approximate birth year, yet her gravestone picture and other obituaries list 1888. Census records indicate a birth year range between 1888-1890, with Dec 1889 being the most detailed as listed in the 1900 census. Because of these numerous conflicts, I cannot state with 100% certainty her exact birth date and birth location. However, based on the preponderance of evidence, I am assessing 1888 is the correct date until other evidence is obtained to prove otherwise. Her parents were Joseph Edwin D. Long and Lydia Viola Oshel. She had 7 siblings; Alva E, Dee Dennis, Carl Oren, Thomas, Jessie, Silvia Pearl (m. Jacobs), and Lillian Georgia (m. Griswold). According to family records, it appears Thomas and Jessie passed away prior to 1900. With regards to her middle name, sources were consistent with her middle initial, however only one source (husband's WWI Draft Registration) identifies her full middle name, although exact spelling (Ledisha vs Lodessa) cannot be confirmed at this time. It appears she worked in the laundry industry her entire life.

Her first identification of an occupation was in 1924 as a Launderer. Through the years she was identified as a Sorter, Machine Operator, and Tumbler Operator. Ultimately, she worked for the Independence Laundry and Dry-Cleaning Company for 35 years. She was a member of the Reorganized Latter Day Saints Church Second Congregation. According to census records, her highest level of education was the 6th grade.

Early in life, Maggie lived in Allen County, Kansas. During her early and teenage years, she lived in several Kansas and Missouri locations due to her parent's relocations. According to her sibling's birth locations, sometime between 1891-1893 the family moved to Missouri, then back to Kansas between 1893-1895, then back again to Missouri between 1895-1900. According to the 1900 United States Federal Census taken on 19 Jun 1900, the family lived on a farm in Henry Township in Vernon County, Missouri. At the time, Maggie Long was 10 years old lived with her parents Joseph E Long (29) and Viola (26) and her 3 siblings; Alva (8), Dennis (6), and Carl Owen (4). However, according to the Kansas State Census taken on 1 Mar 1905, she was now living with her grandparents in Blue Mound, Linn, Kansas. At the time, Maggie Long was 16 years old and lived with her grandparents Jesse Oshel (72) and Sarah (62) and her Aunt Lillie Oshel (22) and Uncle Emmet Oshel (20).

At the age of 17, Maggie and 22-year-old James Arvel McHatton, son of John Hugh McHatton and Matilda Ann Wilson, applied for a marriage license on Saturday, 11 Aug 1906 in Allen County, Kansas. They were married by Rev M. McPhee at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, 12 Aug 1906 at her parent's house at 419 West Chestnut Street in Iola, Allen County, Kansas. There are indications that they may have separated/divorced sometime around 1930, but cannot be confirmed at this time. According to the 1930 census, James was listed as divorced and living in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Maggie and the children were in Jackson County, Kansas. Records indicate Maggie and James had 4 daughters; Frances Marie (m. Cole), Thelma Louise (m. Yale), Viola Anna (m. Martin/Starr) and Irene L (m. McNeely/Guthrie).

After her marriage to James in 1906, it appears they stayed in the Allen County area. According to the 1910 United States Federal Census taken on 22 Apr 1910, they rented a home at 15 South Ohio St in Iola Ward 5, Allen, Kansas. At the time, Maggie McHatton was 21 years old and lived with her spouse J.A. McHatton (26) and their two children; Francis (2) and Thelma (2 mos). According to 1912 city directories, they were living at 22 East Calhoun in Iola, Kansas. However, by 1918, according to her husband's WWI Draft Registration records, they had moved about 120 miles north to Independence, Jackson County, Missouri, where they were living at 808 North Spring. According to the 1920 United States Federal Census taken on 8 Jan 1920, they were living at 137 East College in Independence Ward 2, Blue Township, Jackson, Missouri. At the time, Maggie McHatton was 31 years old and lived with her spouse Arvel McHatton (35) and their four children; Frances (12), Thelma (10), Viola (7) and Irene (4). Over the next few years, according to census records and city directories, it appears they lived in several locations. In 1924, they lived at 826 S Willis and in 1926, at 810 S Grand Avenue. According to the 1930 United States Federal Census taken on 18 Jan 1930, she was renting a home at 600 N Osage in Independence, Blue Precinct 4, Jackson, Missouri. At the time, Maggie McHatton was 40 years old and lived with her four children; Frances Cole (23), Thelma Yale (20) and her spouse Roy Yale (20), Viola Martin (17) her daughter Barbara (3) and Irene McHatton (15). Her spouse James and a brother-in-law, Emery Griswold, were living as a lodgers in Tulsa OK and listed as Divorced. However, Maggie was still listed as married. Sometime around 1932, she had moved to 314 West Kansas while still in Independence. It appears in 1935 Maggie was living with her daughter Frances and her family in Tonkawa, Oklahoma which is about 90 miles from where her husband was living. By 1938 and after the death of her husband, she was living at 511 S. Pleasant. According to the 1940 United States Federal Census taken on 9 Apr 1940, she was living with her daughter and her family at 717 W South Avenue in Independence, Blue Township, Jackson, Missouri. At the time, a widowed Maggie L. McHatton was 52 years old and lived with her daughter Frances M Cole (32) and her spouse Jesse J (4) and their three children; Betty M (11), Jesse D (9) and Doris I (4). According to the 1950 United States Federal Census taken on 19 Apr 1950, she was living at Apt A, 717 W South Ave in Independence, Jackson, Missouri. At the time, Maggie L. McHatton was 61 years old and lived with her mother Liddie V Long (76). She lived at this residence until her death in 1972.

Maggie passed away at the age of 84 on Tuesday, 21 Nov 1972 at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Wyandotte, Kansas as a result of burns suffered from a kitchen fire at her home. On Wednesday, 15 Nov 1972, she suffered critical burns when the nightgown she was wearing ignited when she got too close to her gas kitchen stove. Her neighbor and other good samaritans responded to help smother the fire. She was originally taken to the Independence Sanitarium and hospital but later transferred to the University of Kansas Medical Center Burn Unit. Tragically, she passed away 6 days later as a result of her burns which covered almost 40% of her body. Services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, 24 Nov 1972 in the Carson Chapel in Independence. She was laid to rest on Friday, 24 Nov 1972 in South Block 1 West, Lot 388 of Mound Grove Cemetery in Independence, Jackson County, Missouri.
