Lillian Georgia Long was born on 27 Jul 1902 in Hume, Bates County, Missouri. Her parents were Joseph Edwin D. Long and Lydia Viola Oshel. She had 7 siblings; Maggie Lodessa (m. McHatton), Alva E, Dee Dennis, Carl Oren, Thomas, Jessie, and Silvia Pearl (m. Jacobs). According to family records, it appears Thomas and Jessie passed away prior to 1900. She often went by the name Lillie. According to census records, her highest level of education was the 6th grade.

Early in life, she lived in several locations in Kansas and Missouri. Sometime between 1902-1905, the family moved about 65 miles west from Missouri back into Kansas. According to the 1905 Kansas State Census taken on 1 Mar 1905, they lived in La Harpe, Allen County, Kansas. At the time, Lillie was 3 years old and lived with her parents J.E. Long (33) and Viola (32) and her 4 siblings; Alva Long (13), Dee (11), Carl (9), and Pearl (5). According to her sister's wedding article, in 1906 they were living at 419 West Chestnut Street in Iola, Kansas. Iola is only 9 miles from La Harpe, Kansas. Based on brother Alva's marriage in 1908, the family had moved about 100 miles north to Independence, Missouri in Jackson County sometime between 1907-1908. According to the 1910 United States Federal Census taken on 21 Apr 1910, they rented a home at 808 South Grand Avenue in Independence, Blue Township, Jackson County, Missouri. At the time, Georgia L Long was 8 years old and lived with her parents, Joseph E Long (38) and Lidia V (37) and her three siblings; Dennis D (17), Carl O Long (15) and Sylvia P (9). By 1912, the family was living at 808 S Grand Ave in Independence, Missouri.

At the supposed age of 13, Lillian married 18-year-old Emery Augusta Griswold on 30 Jun 1916 presumably in Missouri. However, besides census records and city directories, no other sources are available to indicate exact date and location. Date was only obtained from family online records. According to local newspaper articles, Lillian filed for divorce in Independence, Missouri around Jun 1930 and according to the 1930 US census, were not living together. Lillian and her children were living with her parents in Independence and Emery was living about 280 mile south in Tulsa, Oklahoma. However, by 1934, it appears they may have reconciled. No indications the divorced was ever finalized. Lillian and Emery had two daughters, Lillian Annette and Loverna Pearl.

After her marriage to Emery in 1916, it appears they lived with her parents for an undetermined time. According to the 1920 United States Federal Census taken on 3 Jan 1920, they owned a house at 808 South Grand Avenue in Independence, Blue Township, Jackson County, Missouri. At the time, Lilian Griswold was 18 years old and along with her husband E.A. Griswold (22), lived with her parents, John E Long (46) and L V *Lydia Viola (46) through at least 1924.
