Born sometime between 1830 - 1835 in Craigtown More, Derry, Ireland [Portstewart is the closest town], Samuel SMIRL married Mary DAYLEY on 12 Feb 1853 in Colraine, Derry, Ireland and imigrated to America in August of 1854 on the Henry Clay. By 1860 he and his family were settled in Wilkes-Barre and he was working as a coal miner. They had ten children. (See Mary's memorial for a list.)

SAMUEL SMURL, who was injured some time ago in the Dorrance mine, died at the City Hospital on Wednesday afternoon. Two amputations had been made, but he was unable to bear the shock, death following close upon the last operation. The funeral will take place Saturday at 2 o'clock from 51 Chester street, Derr's addition.
