Clarice Claiborne "Granny" Massie, 82, homemaker and widow of Ira Evan Massie, died Monday, July 14, 2003. Born in Hopkinsville, KY, she was a daughter of the late James and Katherine Trimmer Claiborne. Clarice was adevoted member of Calvary Baptist Church where she taught the kindergarten class for more than 40 years. Ira and Clarice served as past presidents of local Parent Teacher Associations and she was also very active with the Girl Scouts. She is survived by a daughter and two sons: Diane Massie, Chicago, IL, Ira Evan (Sandy) Massie II, Greenback, TN, and Kevin Claiborne (Bonnie) Massie, Lexington; five grandchildren, Tara and Isaac Massie, both of Greenback, TN, K.C., Kyle, and Travis Massie, all of Lexington; two sisters and two brothers, Carolyn Eastwood, Lafayette, LA, Jane Warren, Orlando, FL, Keith Claiborne, Hopkinsville, KY, and George Claiborne, Owensboro, KY. Sisters Elizabeth Claiborne and Wilma Garnett and brothers, James Claiborne, Jr. and Jerry Claiborne, preceded her in death. Services will be 7 PM Wednesday at W.R. Milward Mortuary-Southland conducted by Rev. Hank Ellington. A committal service will be held at 10 AM Thursday at the Lexington Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:30 PM till service time on Wednesday. Casket bearers will be her sons, grandchildren and nephews, Brent Claiborne, George Claiborne, Jr., and David Claiborne. Memorials may be made to the Calvary Baptist Church Children's Program, 150 East High St, Lexington, KY 40507, or the Ira Massie Memorial Scholarship Fund at the University of Kentucky, Development Office, Lexington, KY, 40506.
