Rites Tuesday
James J. Claiborne Sr., 81-year-old former Christian County sheriff and well-known auctioneer, died at 11:40 p.m. Sunday in Jennie Stuart Hospital.
Mr. Claiborne, a resident of W. Seventh St., had entered the hospital Sunday morning suffering from an apparent heart condition.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Henninger Funeral Home with Dr. James S. Curry, pastor of First Methodist Church, officiating. He will be assisted by the Rev. Sidney Maddox, pastor of First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
Mr. Claiborne served as sheriff of Christian County from 1918 until 1922 and was on the city police force here for a number of years. He was an auctioneer in this community and in more recent years was employed by Christian Quarries and was a soil tester for the Extension Service prior to his retirement in 1966.
Two of his sons, Jerry and George, were football stars at Hopkinsville High School and the University of Kentucky.
Jerry is now head football coach at Virginia Tech and formerly was assistant coach at UK, Texas A&M, and University of Missouri. George was formerly assistant grid coach at HHS and head coach at Daviess County High School, Owensboro.
A native of Christian County, he was born Oct. 4, 1886, the son of the late Joseph E. and Melissa Johnson Claiborne. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.
On July 18, 1912, Mr. Claiborne married Katherine Trimmer, and she died in 1949. He later married Mrs. Inez Atwood, who survives.
Survivors, other than his widow, include five daughters, Miss Elizabeth Claiborne, city, Mrs. Marion Garnett, county, Mrs. James B. Warren, Muritt Island, Fla., Mrs. Ira Massie, Lexington, and Mrs. C. M. Eastwood Jr., Lafayette, La.; four sons, James J. Claiborne Jr., this city, George Claiborne. Owensboro, Jerry Claiborne, Blacksburg, Va., and Keith Claiborne, this city; and three stepsons, John W. Atwood. Eddyville, William F. Atwood, Detroit, and Felix C. Atwood, Frankfort.
A number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive.
Pallbearers will be Felix Atwood, Joel Hanson Jr., David Clark, George Gore, Rudy Thomas and Irvin Munday.
