Per the 1850 census of household 203 in Adams Twp., Champaign County, Ohio. It reveals that Nathan Swisher was born about 1838. His whole family as entered in the census is Michael Swisher, age 50 born in Pennsylvania; Saloma Swisher, age 41 born in Ohio; Elizabeth Swisher age 22 born in Ohio; Isabelle Swisher age 16 born in Ohio; Jemima Swisher age 14 born in Ohio; Nathan Swisher age 12 born in Ohio; Joseph Swisher age 10 born in Ohio; Barbara Ann Swisher age 8 born in Ohio; Esther Swisher age 6 born in Ohio; Enos Swisher age 3 born in Ohio; and Noah Swisher age 1 born in Ohio.
Nathan Swisher and his Joseph Swisher enlisted as Privates in Company E of the 17th Indiana Mounted Infantry on September 3, 1862. The 17th fought major battles at Hoover's Gap (TN), Chickamauga (GA), Farmington (TN), throughout the Atlanta Campaign led by General Sherman, and with General Wilson's raid in Alabama and Georgia in 1865. Nathan survived all of these, but Joseph did not. He was either wounded or became diseased and returned to their home in Thorncreek Twp, Whitley County, Indiana, to recuperate, but instead died on February 24, 1864. Nathan mustered out at Macon, Georgia, on August 8, 1865.

Nathan married Esther Meeker in 1866 in Van Wert County, Ohio.
Nathan was a member of the International Order of the Good Templars. He was Methodist/Episcapalean in Religion. He was also the Treasurer for Wheatland Township, Mecosta County, Michigan for 9 years.Eighty acres of his farm in Wheatland Township became the site of the town of Remus, Mecosta County, Michigan.
After the death of Esther, Nathan married agian to Sophia Hoffkuntyz Brown, a German immigrant on March 13th, 1913 in Grand Rapids< Kent County, Michigan
