Funeral services for Lafe Newton, 66 years of age, were held Saturday, April 3 at 10:30 a.m. at the Campbellsville Baptist Church with Dr. J. Chester Badgett in charge, assisted by the Rev. T.S. Curry. Burial was in Resthaven Cemetery in Jefferson Co., KY. The pallbearers were Edward L. Payne, Ray Borders, Robert S. Bailey, Jim Shacklette, Ingram Caulk and Abel T. Harding Sr. The honorary bearers were L.M. Mitchell, Atha Neagle, H.H. Montgomery, Bruce Hiestan, Philip Corbin, Ray Shively, R.M. Rice, Homer Felts, Rev. B.J. Skaggs, Esro Stapp, F.W. Ross and Olus Warf. Newton, son of the late John Henry & Nancy Wise Newton, was born August 16, 1887 in Taylor Co., KY. He died Thursday, April 1 [1954] at 7:30 a.m. at his home near Hatcher. He professed faith in Christ at the age of 23 and was a member of the Campbellsville Baptist Church. He united in marriage to Hattie Rafferty in 1907. She preceded him in death in 1918. To this union 3 daughters were born. Surviving are: Mrs. Sam McKenna of Louisville and Mrs. Harry Jarboe of Finley. In 1924 he united in marriage to Mrs. Elizabeth Smith Parker, who survives. To this union 1 son was born, Cleon Newton of Lancaster. Besides wife and children, he is survived by: 2 brothers and 3 sisters, Sam & Johnnie Newton, both of Taylor County; Mrs. Rosa Gwinn and Mrs. Cordie Netherland, both of Taylor County and Mrs. Ruth Bryant of Ashland, IL. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. Mr. Newton lived in Louisville from 1909 until 1934 and for 25 years was a motorman for the Louisville Transit Company.
