His mother died in childbirth with twins when Cecil was young. His father remarried, but Cecil and his stepmother did not get along well. He famously jumped out of his second story window, and spent some time living with relatives (with grandparents, Ole/Gurie Ruud of Martell WI and with Aunt Belle/Uncle Nels Houston of Swanburg MN).
Cecil married Anne Bakken in Wisconsin, They enjoyed 71 years of wedded bliss, raising 4 children in Minnesota. Cecil's July 4th birthday is still celebrated with an annual family reunion and attended by 4 generations.
His "black cake" recipe was so popular, it was submitted in his memory multiple times (and even printed twice) for the Faith Lutheran Church (Swanburg, MN) cookbook and continues to be a family favorite!
