Antoine Manseau and his family moved from Canada to Little Chute (now Green Bay), Wisconsin in 1838, then on to Milwaukee and in 1852, to Portage Creek, Michigan, a little north of Manistee.

Antoine, with Julia and their seven children, along with four other men left Manistee, sailing up the coast and arrived at the Carp River June 21, 1853, beginning the settlement of Leland.

Manseau and John Miller had searched the area in 1848 for a saw-mill site and purchased land at the mouth of Carp River, but not until 1853 was the site developed when a dam was built raising the water level about 12 feet.
