Mr. Jacob van Vark, one of our first settlers died very suddenly Thursday morning of last week. Wednesday as usual he went to his farm over the Des Moines River and in the evening, on returning, complained that he did not feel well. He died next morning at about four o’clock. Saturday forenoon the funeral services were held in the First Reformed Church by Rev. Dr. Steffens. Deceased had reached the age of 58 years.

Jacob van Vark was born in the Netherlands on February 20, 1832, the son of Willem and Metta (de Klerk) van Vark. He arrived in New York on the ship Farvlinta on June 11, 1855, with his parents and some of his siblings, and then journeyed to Marion County, Iowa.

On May 14, 1858, he married Janneke (“Jennie”) Synhorst in Marion County. They had four children who survived to adulthood, (i) Wilhlemina, 1863-1940, married Andrew De Penning, (ii) John S., March 24, 1865-September 21, 1961, married Alice de Haan, (iii) Martha Marie, March 23, 1868-May 11, 1954, married Abraham Bogaards, and (iv) Sophia, - February 11, 1878-February 6, 1903.

He died on December 25, 1890, in Pella. Jennie died May 20, 1914.
