Mrs. Parthene "Penny" Slate McDaniel, 83 of Ruritan Lane, Mt. Airy (Toast Community) passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on July 1, 2012 at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home.

She was born in Surry County on July 28, 1928 to the late Hannibal and Neva Belle Smith Slate. She was one of ten children, including her beloved twin sister, Pauline Slate Jennings.

She was a 1947 graduate of Franklin High School where she played basketball for three years, receiving all star honors after graduating; she played three years for Melvins Amoco. She married the love of her life, John Alfred McDaniel, Sr. on September 5, 1952 and had five children together. She was retired from Brown Wooten, after seventeen and half years and was a member of Stewarts Creek Primitive Baptist Church.

She leaves to cherish her precious memory, three sons, Mark Edward McDaniel of the home, Roland Lee McDaniel and John Alfred McDaniel, Jr. both of Mt. Airy; a daughter and son-in-law, Anita and Steve Bruner of Mt. Airy; two granddaughters, Lauren Danielle Bruner and Penny Nicole McDaniel; a grandson, Stephen Chance Bruner; her beloved twin sister, Pauline Slate Jennings of Mt. Airy; a special friend, Alice Willis.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. McDaniel was preceded in death by her loving husband, John Alfred McDaniel, Sr.; a daughter, Debra Lynn McDaniel; five sisters, Lois Virginia Slate McCraw, Anice Ruth Slate Berrier, Leola Dale Slate McMillian, Edith Claire Slate Easter and Mamie Elizabeth Slate; three brothers, Robert Thomas Slate, Abraham Lincoln Slate and Coy Edward Slate.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Gary Lowe, Rev. Thomas Slate and Mr. Jimmy Joyce officiating. Burial will follow in Old Hollow Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday night from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy.

The family wishes to give thanks to the staff at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital, Northern Hospital, and their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home for the loving and compassionate care given to their dear mother, as she made her journey to be with her heavenly father.
