MOUNT AIRY, NC ~ Miss Mamie Elizabeth Slate, 87, of Mount Airy, passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2009, at Northern Hospital of Surry County.

Miss Slate was born in Patrick County, VA on Feb. 8, 1922, daughter of the late Hannibal Slate and Neva Bell Smith Slate.

Mamie was retired from Renfro Corporation and was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sisters, Polly Jennings and Penny McDaniel, both of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Miss Slate was preceded in death by four sisters, Edith Easter, Anice Berrier, Leola McMillian and Lois McCraw; and three brothers, Lincoln Slate, Coy Slate and Robert Slate.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Highland Park Baptist Church. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Bob Josey and the Rev. Thomas Slate with burial to follow in the Booker-Busick-Smith Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Highland Park Baptist Church on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m.
