MANAGER FARM BUREAU ELEVATOR WAS 59 YRS. OLD
The death of Jay W. DeWitt of three and a quarter miles north of Garrett, manager of the Farm Bureau elevator in Garrett, took place suddenly Wednesday morning at 8 o'clock.
Mr. DeWitt was 59 years old and had not been in the best of health for several months, although he worked regularly and was on duty Tuesday. His physician advised that he have his tonsils removed and he went to Sacred Heart hospital Wednesday morning at 7 o'clock for that purpose. A nurse had been administering anaesthetic for about 10 minutes when the patient expired.
An inquest was conducted by Forest D. Zimmerman of Garrett, deputy county coroner, and it was held that death was due to a heart attack.
The body was removed to the Zimmerman funeral home in Garrett, and will be taken to the residence be held at Zion Lutheran church, near DeWitt home, Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The pstor, the Rev. Allen K. Trout of Auburn, will officiate and burial will be made in Union cemetery northwest of Garrett.
Mr. DeWitt was a lifelong resident of Richland township. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John DeWitt and he was married to Mattie Mason June 10, 1904. He engaged in farming and served 12 years as township assessor, followed by a four year term as township trustee. He was appointed manager of the elevator in Garrett in July, 1945, when the Farm Bureau became the owner. He was active in the church, in the Triple A and in the Farm Bureau. He was also a member of the Knights of Pythias at Corunna.
The date of Mr. DeWitt's birth was Jan. 18, 1887.
Suriviving are the widow, five children, Joe H. DeWitt and Merton DeWitt, who live near the parental home, John DeWitt of 517 East King street, Garrett, Mrs. Hurshel Kolbe, a former Auburn resident who lives on the Auburn-Garrett road, and Tommy, 15, at home; two sisters, Mrs. Emery Treesh of three miles north of Garrett and Mrs. Lola Wheeler of north of Auburn; and seven grandchildren.
Mr. DeWitt's father died in 1928 and his mother in April, 1945.
