John Lincoln Downard was a carpenter and farmer. While visiting cousins in Pennsylvania he met Justina Bohun. John was given the middle name Lincoln in honor of the newly elected President A. Lincoln. During Lincoln's re-election campaign, John's father (Ephraim Downard) took young John to see the President. John shook Pres. Lincoln's hand. He fathered 11 children.

Funeral services of John L. Downard, 88, will be held at Miller Chapel at
2:30 p.m. Friday, with the Rev. Walter Llewellyn, pastor of the Keosauqua Christian church, in charge.
Internment will be in the Miller Chapel cemetery.
Mr. Downard died at 10 p.m. Monday at his home near Keosauqua after a long illness.
He was born near Stockport April 22, 1861, the son of Ephriam and Marguerite Downard.
He had been a farmer all his life.
Surviving him are his wife, Justina; four daughters, Mrs. Karl Danneil of Chicago, Mrs. Robert Vickerman and Mrs. Walter Archabald of Keosauqua and Mrs. Darrell Lerche of Ft. Madison:
six sons, Kenneth, Orlen, and Verne of Keosauqua, Robert of Peoria, Ill., Dale of the
Marine Corps in California, and Roy of Chicago;
two brothers, Charles of Bloomfield and Joe of Fairfield:
two sisters, Mrs. Mary Melon and Miss Lizzie Downard of Stockport:
and 18 grandchildren.
One son preceded him in death.
