He was educated in the country schools and spent most of his life in the community farming. He was possessed of musical ability and for many years was a member of the choir of the Baptist church of Plainfield, of which he was a member at the time of his decease.
For the last several years he had been suffering from a physical disability which caused him great pain (thought to be throat cancer). His mother lived with him the last years of her life.
