A lifelong resident of Chicago, born September 27, 1919, the second of three daughters, to the late Francis Leo Cahill, a Chicago firefighter, and the late Martha Augusta Neumeister Cahill.
Graduated from St. Francis Xavier Grammar School and Roosevelt High School.
On September 7, 1946, she married William Oscar Gross and they had three children, Michael, an actor, perhaps best known for his work on television's Family Ties, Elizabeth formerly of the World Bank, and now at the Chicago Offices of Smith Barney, and Mary, an actress, well-known for her work at Chicago's Second City and TV's Saturday Night Live.
Worked for many years as a switchboard operator at Saint Luke's Hospital on South Michigan Avenue, and thereafter at Presbyterian St. Luke's Hospital (now Rush Medical Center). She was the long-time assistant residence director of the Cook County School of Nursing.
She was a devoted Roman Catholic, an active member of St. Francis Xavier and St. Genevieve Church Choirs, and a supporter of the Democratic Party. In March 1972, she helped found the Cragin Community Association Anti-Crosstown Coalition, to oppose the construction of an expressway through the Hermosa-Cragin Community. She won that battle, and was president, for many years thereafter, of the Hermosa Neighbors For Improvement. As president of the Hermosa Park Advisory Council, she participated in youth mentoring, garden planning, and park beautification.
She was a member of the Chicago Police Department 25th District Steering Committee and a member of Friends of the Parks.
In May 2003, Alderman Ray Suarez, the North Pulaski Armitage Chambers of Commerce, and the Chicago Park District honored her almost five decades of service to the community with a tree-planting in her honor.
Mrs. Gross was preceded in death by her sisters, Alice and Helen.
Survived by her husband and immediate family; her grandchildren; and great-grandchildren; a beloved cousin; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Mass was at 11:30 AM, Thursday, March 24, 2005, at St. Genevieve Church, Chicago, IL; interment at All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines, IL.
