Elsie was born to John Fredrick and Margarette Barbara [Rishert] Godfrey on Thu, 30 May 1901. Her parents were married on 29 Nov 1900 in Monongahela, Washington County, Pennsylvania. Her father was a British immigrant, born in England about 1878. She married James Russell Alger on Wed, 14 Feb 1923, in Donora, Washington Co, PA. The following four children were born of their union: Virginia May, James Russell, Florence Elaine and Arlene E.

Elsie discovered that her husband had committed adultery in which a daughter, Lois E. [Mullen] Podesta, was born. He then abandoned both Elsie and their three surviving daughters, as well as Lois and her mother. Elsie altered their surnames from Alger to Algers and raised her girls on her own.

There seems to be some conflict as to Elsie's exact date of death. Per the Social Security Death Index, she passed away on 15 Jan 1972. But a recent discovery of the following obituary has a different date of death. I contacted the cemetery and found out that her daughter, Florence, was buried on the same plot (a double plot) with her. The cemetery confirms that she died on 27 Jan 1972 and was buried on 30 Jan 1972.
