In 1887, he along with John J. Oxendine and Ollin Oxendine were elected by the four trustees that were selected by the North Carolina General Assembly (Rev. W. L. Moore, Preston Locklear, James "Big Jim" Oxendine, and James E. Dial, Sr.) to become the first Board of Trustees for the Croatan Indian Normal School, currently known as the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
